Your own lifestyle might initially influence your decision. If you never use the bathtub and you’re sick of cleaning it, it makes sense to lean toward a shower-only option.

Water usage is another common concern. Especially in areas that regularly experience droughts and water rationing, a bathtub can seem like an unnecessary and even irresponsible luxury. The average bath might require about 70 gallons of water, whereas a ten-minute shower only uses about 25 gallons. Aside from the overall environmental impact during times of drought, you might also worry about the unnecessary effect on your water bill.

A walk-in shower can offer a luxurious spa-like experience. It is also easier to clean and ventilate. You can always include options such as a bench seat and grab bars if you’re worried about ease of use for visitors or family members who are older or handicapped.

And, of course, showers simply make more sense in smaller spaces.

But bathtubs still carry a few pluses. Families with young children often find them to be a necessity, and you can never predict the preferences of future buyers. If you intend to sell your home one day, keeping at least one bathtub in the home can protect your resale value. A prospective buyer could lose interest in the home when realizing that they might be forced to give up their habit of relaxing soaks in the tub. Whereas some people never take baths, others consider them a daily or at least weekly requirement!

Ultimately, your choice might come down to personal preference as well as the length of time you intend to spend in the home. But in many cases, keeping at least one bathtub in the house can be a wise idea, just in case you ever want to sell the home or find an occasional use for a bathtub.
